Retrospect: May and June

May

RCAF Pins

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Air Force, the cadets were authorized to wear the pins made for the occasion. MGen Gartenburg presented the WO1s from the Ottawa Valley with the pins, starting with our own WO1 R. Fantham.

New Squadron Banner

With the change of sponsors at the beginning of the training year, a change of name was in order. But with that change of name had to come a new banner with our new name on it. The National Capital banner was unveiled in early May and was presented to the bearer of the Banner, Cpl C. Bélanger, and the Banner escort, Cpl S. Koelbel.

Gliding Familiarization

We were fortunate to visit the Embrun Gliding Site once again in the spring. FSgt G. Liakos got a ride from FSgt D. Parker, one of the famil pilots from 742 Sqn.

Annual Inspection

On June 5th, the 36th Annual Inspection was held. This marked the end of the training year, and we took this opportunity to reward deserving cadets with trophies, plaques, bursaries and medals. Our Reviewing Officer was Major E. Lanthier, the Regional CIC Officer and a former CO of 742 Sqn. Maj Lanthier was retiring after more than 40 years of service with the Canadian Cadet Movement.

WO1 Fantham escorts Maj Lanthier during the inspection, while BGen (ret'd) Slaughter, our League Representative, and Mr. Curry, the President of our Sponsoring Committee, look on.

WO1 R. Fantham was awarded the Legion Medal of Excellence, given for involvement in Squadron activities and within the community.

And WO2 S. Lajeunesse was awarded the Strathcona Medal of Excellence, the highest award bestowed upon a cadet. It is awarded for performance at the Squadron level, physical fitness, and basically being a model cadet.
