Following is the history of our Squadron. The members of 742 are proud of their history, and year after year continue to fill its books.

742 National Capital Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron was formed on November 5th, 1963, under the auspices of the Ottawa West Optimist Club and was sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion, Montgomery Branch Number 351 of Ottawa between September 1st, 1981 and September 29th, 1998. Since that date, the 742 Squadron Alumni Association has been the sponsor of the Sqn. That change in sponsorship also changed the name of the squadron from 742 Montgomery Legion to 742 National Capital Squadron.

The Squadron always maintained an excellent track record winning the Royal Canadian Air Force Trophy in 1984 for the Top Squadron in Canada. The Squadron also won the AOC Trophy for provincial proficiency twice.  As well, the Top Cadet on the Senior Leaders Course in 1997 was from 742.

The Squadron is the current holder of the Taylor Trophy presented to the best overall Squadron in the Outaouais/Ottawa Valley, which comprises 10 Squadrons competing amongst themselves for this honor. The Squadron won this trophy numerous times, the most recent being from 1994/1995 to 1999/2000.

The 1999/2000 training year went very well, with the Squadron being presented the Gold Circle of Excellence for the third year in a row. During the same League Meeting, WO2 Dan Parker was presented with the trophy going to the best Flying Scholarship pilot of Eastern Region. WO2 Parker received an 86% on his flight test and a 96% on his Transport Canada exam while on his course in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu QC.

As for the 2000/2001 training year, it has started very well. We were presented with the Gold Circle of Excellence for a fourth year in a row. Stay tuned for more, as sports competitions begin in the region.
